2014 F.E.E.T. Scholarship

The Faber-Economon European Travel Scholarship (F.E.E.T.) is an award specifically designed to introduce Honors students to Europe. Made available through the generosity of two Honors alumni, Hanneke Faber and Aris Economon, the goal of the F.E.E.T. scholarship is to provide Honors students who've never been "across the pond" the chance to visit Europe without having to enroll in classes or take time off from school.

Scholarship recipients willreceive airfare to/from Europe, a 2-week Eurail pass and a ~€750.00 stipend.

To be considered for the F.E.E.T. Scholarship, students must demonstrate:

• good standing in the Honors College and with the University of Houston (3.50 cumulative gpa, completion of the Human Situation sequence and a minimum of one Honors course per semester of participation in Honors (can be cumulative)


• completion of at least 3 semesters at the University of Houston and have at least 2 semesters remaining (Spring 2014 and December 2013 graduates are ineligible to apply)


• already possess or be able to obtain a passport by February 2014


• able to travel during May 11-June 8, 2014


• have never previously traveled to Europe (including the United Kingdom)

*There will be a $1000 stipend awarded to the four runners-up, which will be applied to another study abroad opportunity, including participation in either of the
study abroad trips to France & Spain and Israel & Turkey, taking place in May/June 2014.

As a young child, Ryan Rogers found inspiration under the hood of the family car working alongside his father, an experienced mechanic. He realized that he possessed a knack not just for figuring out how things worked, but for figuring out how to make things work better. This ability brought the 18-year-old Eugene native to Oregon State University this fall as a first-year engineering student.

Rogers was searching online for scholarships when he learned about one of the largest programs in the country, the Buick Achievers Scholarship, funded by the General Motors Foundation. He applied, and won the prestigious Buick Achievers National Scholarship. Awarded to only 100 students across the country, the $25,000 annual scholarship is aimed at promising engineering students. His winning essay focused on his interest in alternative energy and discovering more sustainable power sources.

"I plan to study mechanical or chemical engineering and to use my knowledge to get a job researching new materials and new techniques for storage of energy," he wrote in his essay. "I am excited to work toward discoveries to make cars more sustainable and affordable. I want to help push the automotive industry positively into the world of tomorrow."

GM awarded 1,100 college scholarships this year, but only 100 are national, representing a highly select group of promising scholars. Rogers is the only student from an Oregon high school or attending an Oregon college or university, public or private, to win the national recognition this year.

"Through the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, the GM Foundation is able to make a significant investment in the next generation of our country's leaders and innovators," said GM Foundation President Vivian Pickard in a statement announcing the award.

Rogers also earned the Presidential, Engineering Dean's and Honors College scholarships from Oregon State and other scholarships from South Eugene High School, all of which will help cover his cost of college.

He had his pick of colleges, but Oregon State was his top choice. He was first attracted to the school through visits to Ultimate Frisbee tournaments on campus, but it was the College of Engineering's excellent reputation that ultimately attracted him to Corvallis.

Rogers is an avid athlete and outdoorsman, but he still finds time to tinker in the garage with his father, who recently retired from United Airlines. They recently spent time repairing the motor of a jet ski, and found their roles somewhat reversed. "It's gone from him telling me what to do, " he said, "to me sometimes telling him what to do."

The University of Akron : Admission Postsecondary

Fall semester, 2002, marked the very beginning of the Honors Scholars Connections (HSC) at The University of Akron. The first class consisted of seven men and women from the surrounding school districts. As the program continues to develop, we would like to strive for an enrollment of up to fifteen students, keeping the program relatively small in order to foster group interaction among the students who are chosen for this program. The academy experience is for students who would normally be completing their senior year of high school, although exceptional juniors and first year commuter students will also be considered.

The curriculum for HSC students includes some flexibility and some requirements. Perhaps most important is that students in the academy commit to take the majority of their courses at The University of Akron. With the help of the HSC coordinator and academic advisors, those students in the academy who are planning to take the same courses are encouraged to register for classes at the same time so as to build friendships and peer support among students in the program. One major advantage of the Honors Scholars Connections is that students are given the benefit of registering for their courses before all other post-secondary students ensuring that they will be able to enroll in their first choice of classes. Students are encouraged to enroll in honors sections of courses they plan to take. Students may also enroll in elective academic subjects (for a total of twelve to fourteen credits) in their areas of interest.

In addition to taking most of their courses at UA, students in this program are given the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities at the university as well. Permission for participation is required to help support the success of post-secondary students at The University of Akron, and HSC students may not participate in athletics, speech and debate, or in social fraternities or sororities.

Another benefit of the HSC is that members are given 24 hour access to the academic wing of the Honors Complex at The University of Akron. The academic wing includes the 24-hour Honors Computer Lab, the large two-story Honors Common Room, three seminar classrooms, and one large classroom.

The Honors College sponsors HSC, and a graduate student enrolled in the College of Education serves as a mentor and coordinator for the Academy. This individual is accessible to students in the program and has an office in the Honors Complex. The coordinator of HSC arranges activities to provide a sense of community for participants. These activities may include lunchtime meetings, bowling in the Student Union, tours of campus facilities, or special lectures from UA or visiting faculty members. Prior to the beginning of each school year an introductory event will take place for students to become familiar with the expectations of the program. In addition, a banquet will take place at the close of each academic school year.

Position Description
The Honors College invites applicants and seeks nominations for the position of Director of Advising. The Director will advise students regarding their Honors College academic program and University curriculum. The Director will coordinate all aspects of academic advisement for the college and work closely with the Dean's Office. The Director of Advising will collaborate with faculty, staff and students to plan and implement the Honors College portion of the Academic Orientation Program. The Director will provide leadership and coordination for the Academic Scholars Program and the Honors College campus admission process.

Responsibilities Include:
* Coordinating academic advisement and associated responsibilities for the Honors College.
* Coordinating Summer Academic Orientation Program as an advisor and Honors College representative.
* Supervise the Honors College advising staff.
* Coordinating training and professional development of Honors College advising staff.
* Advising undergraduate students on curriculum, professional preparation and fulfillment of Honors College and Academic Scholars Program requirements.
* Coordinating on-campus admission to the Honors College and review of student eligibility for continued membership in the college.
* Managing appeals processes and responding to student, faculty and parent concerns, in conjunction with the Dean's office
* Managing academic record maintenance and graduation certification.
* Coordinating interuniversity relationships with academic affairs units across campus.
* Complying with data requests.
