Angela Jenkins, chemistry '94, always packs an Auburn shirt when she travels.

"I just love 'War Eagle moments,'" she said. "There are so many things I remember fondly about my time at Auburn, like the movies in Langdon Hall, going to The Flush, and the friends I made are like my family now. We are one big Auburn Family."

Although she harbors many fond memories from her days in school at Auburn, the road to graduation was rough for Jenkins. During her first week of college, she lost her mother to breast cancer. A few months later, her father was deployed with Operation
Desert Storm.

"I was in chemical engineering at the time, and I stuck out the semester. It was a very difficult time. I had also gone to a predominantly black high school, and it was a big adjustment coming to Auburn where suddenly I was a minority," Jenkins said. "Family, friends, and prayer are what got me through that first year."

During her sophomore year, she changed majors and became a chemistry student in COSAM.

"I realized one day I did not want to be an engineer, but I didn't want to lose all of the credits I had accumulated, so I began studying biochemistry," she said.

Jenkins' degree in chemistry has served her well in her career, and she is currently a primary care professional with Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals. As such, she provides primary care physicians from Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi with medications used to treat patients suffering from cardiac or respiratory illness.

"I have sold drugs for every part of the body at some point, and I learned plenty about anatomy and physiology at Auburn, which helps," said Jenkins. "A lot of people in my field have degrees in business or marketing. When we are in training, it can get very scientific, which comes more easily for me since I have a background in chemistry."

Jenkins says the background in science is only part of why she appreciates her Auburn education.

2013/4 Madeleine Giguère Scholarships Awarded

Congratulations to Hattie Freye of New Gloucester (pictured) and Leah Jutras of Auburn - the awardees of this year's Madeleine Giguère Scholarship. Each will receive $1000 towards their studies at USM's Lewiston-Auburn College. The Madeleine Giguère Scholarship is awarded every year to up to three students who show an interest in Maine's Franco-American community, whether through their family background, career goals or academic studies. Students must be enrolled at USM LAC for the upcoming school year (the award is open to incoming freshmen). The scholarship is the result of a bequest by a co-founder of the Franco-American Collection, Professor Madeleine Giguère, and it aims to encourage the study of Maine's Franco-Americans, a field which Prof. Giguère pioneered during her many years at USM. The deadline for applications for the 2014/5 academic year will be in March 2014. Auburn University Theatre Awesome Autumn Scholarship Event

2013 Auburn University Theatre Scholarship Day: Scholarship interviews & auditions for students interested in the BA, BFA Design Tech, Production Management and BFA Music Theatre programs.

When: Saturday, October 19, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Where: Telfair Peet Theatre - Samford Avenue & Duncan Drive in Auburn, Alabama

Award: Substantial one-year departmental scholarship awards will be made to outstanding students who participate in the competitive on-site auditions and presentations.

PLEASE NOTE:

"The College of Liberal Arts provides College and Departmental Scholarships to eligible students through the new Auburn University Scholarship Opportunity Manager (AUSOM). Students can easily search, review requirements, apply, and accept awards for available scholarship opportunities. Interested students can apply for all institutional scholarships using this online application. The application deadline is March 1, 2014. Who: Open to high school seniors and college transfer students who intend to major in Theatre and have maintained a 3.0 grade point average in their high school or previous college academic work. High school juniors are welcome to tour our facility, attend mini-classes, and speak with faculty, staff, and students about our degree programs, dance minor, and performance/design/tech/management opportunities. In addition, we welcome any Auburn students who may be interested in theatre to join us and explore the possibilities of a theatre major.

Workshops /Interview/ Audition or Presentation: High school seniors will have the chance to audition/interview for scholarship consideration and admission to our theatre program by attending mini-classes in acting, singing, music theatre dance, voice and speech, improvisation, design and technical theatre, and management. The audition portion of the event, for those seniors who wish to audition for scholarships and/or entry into the program will take place in the early afternoon.

B.A. Scholarships: Students will participate in an interview with BA faculty and present any written or portfolio work they choose. The BA in Theatre provides a flexible degree track that enables students to shape their own curriculum while engaging in both upper-level seminars and production-oriented classes. A terrific fit for students who want to double-major and/or attend graduate school, the BA provides the best of both practical and academic worlds and graduates well-rounded artists and scholars.

Entrance into the Music Theatre Program: Please prepare two minutes of material, including a monologue and a song. For further information, contact Sean Michael Flowers, Music Theatre Director (smf0023@auburn.edu). The BFA in Music Theatre is a four-year degree track that offers practical, pre-professional skills in acting, dancing, and singing for the student whose ambition is to be a professional actor. The degree combines a liberal arts education with applied skills in performance that will serve the undergraduate actor seeking graduate school placement or professional employment.

Performance Scholarships: MT applicants can present the material described above. Non-MT performers may present two minutes of material- two contrasting monologues. The BFA in Performance is a two-year sequence that offers studio acting, voice and movement training with professional actors, as well as opportunities to participate in a wide variety of production experiences. The degree will serve undergraduate actors seeking graduate school placement and professional employment.

Design /Tech Scholarships: Design /Technology applicants may present a portfolio of their design and production work. Our B.F.A. in Design & Technology offers a professional training program designed to provide students with skills and experience necessary to prepare them for direct entry into graduate school or professional employment. Our intensive theatre design training offers students highly specialized courses of study and the opportunity to work with national and international professionals on campus and abroad. Under the guidance of design faculty and established working professionals, our students hold key roles in the design and production work in our season, and learn to compile a professional portfolio.

Management Scholarships: Management applicants may present a portfolio/binder including promptbooks and other paperwork that demonstrate the ability to organize, track, document, and oversee any and all areas of production. For further information, contact Alisa Allison (MAA0020@auburn.edu). The BFA in Management degree provides students focused on working professionally as stage, company, and production managers with the training they need to succeed. Management students are widely trained within the department in all aspects of theatre so that they can communicate clearly with all areas of production. This training is augmented by courses outside the department in non-profits management and small group communication. Management students consistently find internships and employment in the field upon graduation.
