Scholarships

Carthage offers a number of competitive scholarships to prospective art majors, and smaller scholarships to art minors. These scholarships are awarded based upon a cumulative review of a candidate's application for admission to Carthage, in addition to a review of the applicant's Studio Art Portfolio by members of the faculty of the Art Department.

Portfolio Review

Students applying for an Art Scholarship at Carthage are asked to present a portfolio of their artwork for an in-person review. Faculty members will conduct portfolio reviews on the following dates:

• Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013


• Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013


• Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013


• Saturday, March 2, 2013

To make an appointment for a portfolio review, please contact the Division of Fine Arts at 262-551-5859. Many students have their portfolio reviewed when they are on campus for the Presidential Scholarship competition on one of the four dates listed above.

The results of all Studio Art Portfolio reviews will be included in applicants' financial aid packages developed in March by the Office of Financial Aid. Portfolios must be reviewed by the end of February to be considered as part of the financial aid package.

Portfolio Guidelines

The portfolio should consist of 15 art pieces in a variety of media. You are asked to bring a digital copy of the works on a CD with .jpg image files, in addition to the actual works on the day of your portfolio review. You will take the works themselves home after the review, but you will leave the CD for review by the entire Art Department faculty. The CD should include a text document with information about each piece in your portfolio, including title, date, medium, and size.

The following suggestions will help you in the selection of your work:

• Have an art teacher or mentor help you choose your best and most representative works. The works should represent a mature approach to applying basic art principals.


• The portfolio should demonstrate the breadth of accomplishment in different media such as drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, clay, metal, wood, etc. It is recommended that the portfolio include the variety of media that the applicant has studied.


• Works that are too large to be brought to Carthage may be represented only on the digital portfolio CD that you bring with you on the day of your review.


• All 2-D work should be matted and presented in a clean, professional manner. The work need not be framed.

Auditions and Scholarships

An audition is required of students who intend to study opera or music theatre at Carthage. This audition is required for admittance into the program, as well as for consideration for scholarships.

Students who intend to focus on opera must audition for the music faculty for acceptance into the Bachelor of Arts in Music: Emphasis in Vocal Performance. Students are asked to prepare two contrasting pieces (memorized) as well as demonstrate sight reading and aural skills. A music literacy exam is also part of the audition process.

Students who intend to focus on music theatre must audition for both the Music and Theatre departments for acceptance into the Bachelor of Arts in Music Theatre. For the music audition, students are asked to prepare two full-length, memorized pieces of contrasting nature (either style/genre or tempo). Additionally, students will be asked to demonstrate sight reading and aural skills. A music literacy exam is also part of the audition process. For the theatre audition, students are asked to prepare two short monologues, each no longer than two minutes. An interview with the theatre faculty is also part of the process. Additionally, a dance placement audition is required of all Music Theatre candidates.

Students accepted into the Music Theatre and Opera Program are eligible to compete for music merit scholarships. These talent-based scholarships range from $2,000 to $10,000 and are renewable annually. Music scholarships complement most other merit-based scholarships up to full tuition value (total scholarship awards do not exceed full tuition value).

Auditions

All entering music majors and minors must pass an entrance audition for admission to the program. A panel of three or more members of the music faculty must approve that audition. Auditions include a demonstration of performance ability, a theory assessment, and a keyboard skills assessment. Additionally, students must demonstrate some proficiency with sight reading, scales (instrumental) and aural skills (vocal).

Scholarships

Carthage offers a number of generous Music Scholarships by audition to music majors and non-majors. These scholarships range from $2,000 to $13,000 a year and are renewable. Each year the College awards more than $150,000 in renewable scholarships.

Scholarships are awarded in the amounts of:

$13,000 - one award
$10,000 - $7,000 - three awards
$5,000 - $4,000 - nine awards
$3,000 - nine awards

The larger awards go only to music majors, but an additional number of renewable $2,000 scholarships are awarded to both majors and non-music majors who are required to participate in one of the concert organizations and, for the first two years, to study private music lessons.

Audition Dates

The results of all music auditions are included in students' financial aid packages sent out in March by the Office of Financial Aid.

Many students audition when they are on campus for the Presidential Scholarship competition. Many others audition on one of several scheduled audition days, on a Capture Carthage day, or within reason, by appointment. What to prepare

Two selections of music of contrasting style. There will be sight-reading and scales (major only) asked of instrumentalists, and sight reading and exercises in tonal memory for vocalists.

Percussion: Choose two of the following areas of performance: Snare Drum, Keyboard Percussion, Timpani, Drum Set (demonstrate time, skills and soloing) * If you are auditioning in two areas, please prepare 2 selections for your primary performance area and one for the secondary. Memorization of selections is preferred for vocalists.

Accompanist: We will provide an accompanist if needed. Please bring the music with you for the accompanist on the day of your audition. If you prefer, recorded accompaniment is acceptable.

Where to go

Auditions are held in the H.F. Johnson Fine Arts Center, room 140 or room 142. This building is located just south past the chapel. Turn right when you pass the chapel heading south. There is a visitor parking lot to your left. Our building is directly north. There are two sets of doors. Please enter the southwest doors, turn to your right and go downstairs. There are practice rooms available on both floors for pre-audition warm-ups.

Riley Construction chosen to lead science center project

Carthage has selected Kenosha-based Riley Construction as the construction manager for a new, $40 million science center.

The company was chosen from among four invited firms. Riley has done extensive construction on campus, including three of the six residence hall buildings in the Oaks Village.

Besides its previous work at Carthage, the company was selected for its experience with buildings similar to the planned science center. Riley has built research facilities for SC Johnson, Abbott Laboratories, and other clients, as well as lab space for several hospitals in southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

"This is a highly qualified firm," said William Hoare, associate vice president for business at Carthage. "Its technology-driven construction management practices meld well with Carthage practices."

The project includes a major renovation of the 70,000-square-foot David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Natural and Social Sciences and a new 35,000-square-foot wing. It will increase classroom and laboratory space by 40 percent, provide state-of-the-art facilities for study in the natural sciences, and provide new ways for students and faculty to collaborate on forefront research.

Groundbreaking is tentatively scheduled for spring 2014. Riley Construction is eager to work with the College "in this prestigious project," company President Dave Riley said.

"As an active member of the community, it is always rewarding to be involved in projects that will attract the best and brightest into the fold of our community," he said. "The Carthage College/Riley Construction team has been a very successful partnership in the past, and we expect this alliance to exceed that mark."
