Carthage has selected Kenosha-based Riley Construction as the construction manager for a new, $40 million science center.
The company was chosen from among four invited firms. Riley has done extensive construction on campus, including three of the six residence hall buildings in the Oaks Village.
Besides its previous work at Carthage, the company was selected for its experience with buildings similar to the planned science center. Riley has built research facilities for SC Johnson, Abbott Laboratories, and other clients, as well as lab space for several hospitals in southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
"This is a highly qualified firm," said William Hoare, associate vice president for business at Carthage. "Its technology-driven construction management practices meld well with Carthage practices."
The project includes a major renovation of the 70,000-square-foot David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Natural and Social Sciences and a new 35,000-square-foot wing. It will increase classroom and laboratory space by 40 percent, provide state-of-the-art facilities for study in the natural sciences, and provide new ways for students and faculty to collaborate on forefront research.
Groundbreaking is tentatively scheduled for spring 2014. Riley Construction is eager to work with the College "in this prestigious project," company President Dave Riley said.
