Carthage offers a number of competitive scholarships to prospective art majors, and smaller scholarships to art minors. These scholarships are awarded based upon a cumulative review of a candidate's application for admission to Carthage, in addition to a review of the applicant's Studio Art Portfolio by members of the faculty of the Art Department.
Portfolio Review
Students applying for an Art Scholarship at Carthage are asked to present a portfolio of their artwork for an in-person review. Faculty members will conduct portfolio reviews on the following dates:
- Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013
- Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013
- Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013
- Saturday, March 2, 2013
To make an appointment for a portfolio review, please contact the Division of Fine Arts at 262-551-5859. Many students have their portfolio reviewed when they are on campus for the Presidential Scholarship competition on one of the four dates listed above.
The results of all Studio Art Portfolio reviews will be included in applicants' financial aid packages developed in March by the Office of Financial Aid. Portfolios must be reviewed by the end of February to be considered as part of the financial aid package.
Portfolio Guidelines
The portfolio should consist of 15 art pieces in a variety of media. You are asked to bring a digital copy of the works on a CD with .jpg image files, in addition to the actual works on the day of your portfolio review. You will take the works themselves home after the review, but you will leave the CD for review by the entire Art Department faculty. The CD should include a text document with information about each piece in your portfolio, including title, date, medium, and size.
The following suggestions will help you in the selection of your work:
- Have an art teacher or mentor help you choose your best and most representative works. The works should represent a mature approach to applying basic art principals.
- The portfolio should demonstrate the breadth of accomplishment in different media such as drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, clay, metal, wood, etc. It is recommended that the portfolio include the variety of media that the applicant has studied.
- Works that are too large to be brought to Carthage may be represented only on the digital portfolio CD that you bring with you on the day of your review.
- All 2-D work should be matted and presented in a clean, professional manner. The work need not be framed.
