UM-Flint Physical Therapy Hosting Fulbright Scholar from Nigeria

The University of Michigan-Flint has been selected to host a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence from Nigeria during the 2013-2014 academic year.

Olubusola Esther Johnson, an expert in orthopedic physical therapy from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, was awarded the Fulbright grant by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Johnson will lecture on cultural competence and orthopedic special topics. Her primary objective while on the UM-Flint campus is to do a comparative study of professional physical therapy curricula between Nigeria and the United States. During her visit she will participate in teaching, faculty meetings, curriculum review, state and national physical therapy, professional, and educational conferences, and visits with other universities and physical therapy clinics.

Johnson is one of approximately 800 outstanding foreign faculty and professionals who will teach and/or research in the United States through the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program in 2013-2014. The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program brings scholars and professionals from abroad to U.S. colleges and universities.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. The primary source of funding for the Fulbright Program is an annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program operates in over 155 countries worldwide.

Since its establishment in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Fulbright Program has given approximately 318,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists, and scientists the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.

About the Doctor of Nursing Science Degree

The Doctor of Nursing Practice Program is a clinical doctoral program for advanced practice registered nurses, such as nurse practitioners (NPs) or clinical nurse specialists(CNSs) who are looking to further their education. An alternative to researched-focused doctoral programs, the DNP builds upon a traditional master's program by providing education in evidence-based practice, quality improvement and systems leadership, in addition to other key areas. Funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration, Advanced Education Nursing Grant, the DNP program prepares nurse leaders to become clinical scholars, health care and policy leaders and evidence-based practice experts, as well as informatics and quality improvement leaders.

Residency requirements: Due to federal regulations from the Department of Education, the College of Nursing currently accepts applications for its online master's and doctoral degree programs from residents of the following states: Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

University of Arkansas at Little Rock

The annual "Salute & Celebrate" benefitting endowed undergraduate scholarships in the UALR School of Social Work will honor the work of faculty member Amy Garland Angel.

The event will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, at Next Level Events.

Dr. Howard M. Turney, director of the School of Social Work at UALR, said choosing to honor Angel was an easy choice because her dedication and loyalty has benefited a generation of social workers.

"Her contribution to social work education will influence the work of social workers for years to come. UALR is fortunate to have such a competent and skilled faculty member," Turney said.

Angel plays an important role in maintaining the internship site for the UALR School of Social Work Graduate Program and also arranges more than 100 field placements for students in Arkansas agencies every year.

Salute & Celebrate will feature live music by the band Lagnaippe. Event organizers have also planned a silent auction, libations, a fajita bar, and dancing.

Tickets are $50 and all proceeds will help fund scholarships for students of UALR's School of Social Work.

"As we grow, the school's need for scholarships grow. This is an important event for the future of the School of Social Work," said Turney.

Turney said that increasing higher education costs necessitates scholarships to help students achieve their goals, especially non-traditional students who must balance jobs with school.

"Scholarships supplement or even make the difference in a student's ability to complete his or her education," Turney said. "Some are unable to reach educational goals simply because there are no resources available. Scholarships do make that difference."
