Congrats to Lisa Tsosie, a junior applied computing major in New College, who received a coveted Google Women of Color Scholarship to attend the 2013 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, Oct. 2-5 in Minneapolis.

Tsosie was selected to receive one of the highly competitive awards from more than 900 applicants.

She has been working on multiple research projects with professor Yasin Silva, including one to develop a tool to help parents identify bullying of adolescents on Facebook. Tsosie and Silva wrote up an abstract for the "Facebully" project, which was selected for presentation at the conference. But Tsosie didn't expect to be able to attend until she received word that she received the scholarship from Google.

"A Survivor's True Tale of Rape and Recovery"

Nancy Donoval, national story slam champ, will speak about her own experience as a survivor of sexual assault on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7

p.m. in Wallenberg Hall on the second floor of Augustana College's Denkmann Memorial Building (3520 7th Ave., Rock Island). The event is sponsored by Family Resources, Inc. Members of the Quad-City community, especially teens and their parents, are encouraged to attend.

Donoval was a 19-year-old college student when she went out for a night of fun and drinking and was raped by a trusted classmate. The presentation, titled "The Road to Shameless: A Survivor's True Tale of Rape and Recovery," tells Donoval's own experience as a survivor of sexual assault and how she found a voice to speak about it. Witty and compassionate, "The Road to Shameless" speaks the unspeakable with humor and grace, making a painful topic not only bearable, but also, in the words of one audience member, "an experience of exhilarating liberation."

"I am a storyteller by trade, so I speak at colleges to put a human face on what day-to-day life is like for a survivor" said Donoval.

Donoval brings 25 years of experience as a professional storyteller, speaker and theater artist to her work as a sexual violence educator and activist. She is the founder of Stories 2 Stop Rape, providing sexual violence awareness and prevention performances, keynotes and seminars to colleges and universities. Donoval combines her experience as a survivor with her skills as a storyteller to actively engage students - men and women - in talking honestly about sexual violence in order to reduce the stigma of rape, inspire hope in survivors and their loved ones and motivate change in campus culture.

Donoval recently received an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board to study the use of digital storytelling in working with sexual assault survivors, their loved ones and the community at large.

She received her bachelor's degree in speech from Marquette University, Milwaukee, and her master of fine arts in theatre from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. Donoval is an associate member of the Association for Fraternity/Sorority Advisors and teaches beginning and advance storytelling courses at Metropolitan State University, Minneapolis.

Bagley College of Engineering | Engineering Our State | Mississippi State Unviersity " Bomgar scholarships available to CSE and ECE students

STARKVILLE, Miss.-The big orange Bomgar bus parked outside Mississippi State University's Colvard Student Union Friday, Sept. 6, bringing with it scholarship opportunities for computer-focused students.

Stopping at the Starkville campus as part of a 27 city tour, the company announced it will award five $1,600 scholarships to Bagley College of Engineering students in computer science, software engineering or computer engineering. The application deadline is Sept. 30.

The scholarship recipients will be announced during an October open house at the new Bomgar office in the Thad Cochran Research, Technology and Economic Development Park.

Donna Reese, head of the computer science and engineering department, said the scholarships are a way to encourage more students to pursue computing degrees. They also help make students aware of Bomgar's work and its employment opportunities. The company has a history of hiring Mississippi State graduates.

"They come regularly to recruit," Reese said. "They are a small company so they are looking for ways to get the Bomgar name in front of students early in their academic careers so that they will consider it when they are looking for jobs after graduation."

In addition to the scholarships, Bomgar will also help send female students to Minneapolis for the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing conference in October. The company sent four students from Mississippi State to the conference in Baltimore last year.

Bomgar has also donated $2,000 to the computer science and engineering department to support the department's diversity and faculty enrichment programs.
