Extending our appreciation for military service, DeVry University offers a Veteran's Appreciation Grant to help provide assistance for hardworking, talented students who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Open to new and continuing students who are veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, their respective reserve forces, Army National Guard, and Air National Guard) and can provide a copy of one of the following items:

• DD214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty


• NGB22 National Guard Report of Separation or Record of Service


• 
  Award amount: $500 per semester (valued up to $4,500)


• 
  Offered: United States, onsite or online


• 
  Continued eligibility:
  • Must maintain a 2.5 CGPA
  
  
  • Enroll in at least 9 credit hours per semester
  
  

Note: Current members of the U.S. Armed Forces (those serving on active duty, guard, reserve, and their spouses) who qualify for the military tuition rate and veterans who received a dishonorable discharge are not eligible for this grant.

At the age of 32 (after a career as a journeyman ironworker) I enlisted in the U.S. Army. I spent 5 years in the Army as a unit level Communications Operator and Repair Technician, including the elite position of Paratrooper assigned to 165th M.I. Battalion attached to E. Co. 51st ABN (Airborne) Long Range Surveillance Co. This experience led me to the opportunity to seek a college education through MSJC. One of my most rewarding accomplishments is my involvement with the Eagle Veterans and Dependants Organization as their Scholarship and Grant Coordinator. I help MSJC College Veterans with awareness and opportunities available to them through the VA and Mt. San Jacinto College.

I hope that MSJC's investment in me will not only assist me in the accomplishment of my personal goals, but will also benefit our community.

Scholarships

PCOM offers three different kinds of scholarships to students:

The PCOM Office of Admissions offers merit scholarships to newly admitted students.

If you are awarded an admissions merit scholarship, you will be notified directly by the PCOM Office of Admissions. You are not required to file a FAFSA to be considered for these merit scholarships and there is no application.

The PCOM Office of Financial Aid awards financial need scholarships to admitted and returning students. You must complete the FAFSA correctly if you wish to be considered for PCOM's financial need scholarships.

You are REQUIRED to post your parent information on the FAFSA if you are age 26 and younger as of December 31, 2012. If you are 27 and older as of January 1, 2013, parent information is NOT required on the FAFSA to be considered for PCOM's financial need scholarships.

There are no separate applications. If you are awarded a financial need scholarship, it will appear on your Nucleus Financial Aid Checklist as part of your financial aid award summary.

You must complete the PCOM Scholarship Application as part of your Nucleus Financial Aid Checklist in order to be considered for all PCOM endowed scholarship funds that have unique criteria.

Also, the PCOM Financial Aid Office is periodically notified of external agency scholarships. By completing the PCOM Scholarship Application on Nucleus, we will specifically notify you of those external agency scholarships that you may apply for.

Many of PCOM's endowed scholarships are made available to students through funding from PCOM alumni. If you are awarded a PCOM endowed scholarship, we highly encourage you to write a letter of thanks to the PCOM Alumni Office and/or appropriate scholarship committee.

We recommend utilizing the following websites to search for additional external scholarships that may be available for graduate and medical students:

The United States Army, Navy, and Air Force offer prospective military physicians, physician assistants, clinical psychologists, and pharmacists a paid medical education in exchange for service as a commissioned medical department officer. Eligibility is for U.S. citizens based on academic performance, recommendations, and physical requirements. The Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) provides funding for a monthly stipend, tuition and fees, books and instruments. In return for the scholarship, recipients are obligated to give one year of service for each year of support (minimum two years of service). Recipients will be required to spend 45 days on active duty each year while in school (usually on weekends). Click on a link below for additional information:

HPSP opportunities are not offered by the United States Marine Corps, since it receives its medical services from the U.S. Navy.

PCOM participates in the Veteran's Administration Yellow Ribbon program.

Students who are eligible to receive VA benefits under the Post-9/11 GI bill may be considered to receive additional funds from PCOM under this program.

Eligible students should submit their certification of eligibility to the PCOM Office of the Registrar.

As there is a limited number of Yellow Ribbon scholarships, the awarding will be based on when the certification of eligibility is received. A maximum of 10 awards will be made to graduate students, and a maximum of 10 awards will be made to medical students.

Tuition and fees paid under the Post-9/11 is capped at $17,500 or the appropriately reduced amount based on your eligibility percentage for the academic year.

Veteran Posse Scholars to Enter This Fall

It's official! Eleven military veterans will enroll this fall, as members of Vassar's Class of 2017, through a new partnership with the acclaimed Posse Foundation. For more than two decades, the foundation has helped top colleges enroll thousands of talented public high school graduates who might have been overlooked by traditional admissions processes and helped the students to attain academic success by placing them in supportive, multicultural teams or "posses"-usually of 10 students. Even the White House has praised the collaboration.

A team of administrators, including President Hill, Dean of Admissions David Borus, Dean of the Faculty Jonathan Chenette, and Dean of Freshmen Benjamin Lotto, interviewed 25 applicants for the Vassar posse-five more than initially planned-with the intention of admitting 10 as students. But, as President Hill says, "so outstanding were the candidates" that they ultimately chose 11. The eight men and three women, ages 26 to 35, who have served in the Army, the Marine Corps, and the Air Force in the United States and Middle East, "will bring a new and important perspective to life on the Vassar campus," she says.

President Hill initiated the partnership with the Posse Foundation in 2012, after noting the low number of recent veterans who have applied to top colleges and universities in the U.S. Vassar will be the first college to participate in the Veterans Posse Scholar program.

The foundation's partner schools award Posse Scholars four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships. Similarly, through the Veterans Posse Program, each Veterans Posse Scholar will attend tuition-free, through a combination of the college's scholarship aid and G.I. Bill benefits, and the students will continue to receive support through graduation.
