Ways of Giving | Eastern Shore Community College

Ways of Giving/Opportunities to Give

Cash (usually in the form of a check) is the most common way to give. Gifts of cash can be deducted up to 50% of your adjusted gross income in the year you make the gift; any unused deduction can be deducted in any of the next five tax years. Please mail your check to the ESCC Foundation, 29300 Lankford Highway, Melfa, VA 23410

Stocks and Bonds are, next to cash, the most popular way of making a gift. Giving securities owned for more than a year creates an income tax deduction equal to the securities' cash value, while avoiding capital gain tax.

Real Estate or real property gifts are considered by the ESCC Foundation on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the property's marketability or the location's usefulness to the college among other factors. Please obtain professional advice regarding any tax benefits of giving real property.

Personal Property with a use in the college's educational programs are welcomed as Gifts in Kind (see below). Other valuable property such as antique furniture, works of art, or otherwise will be considered for acceptance by the ESCC Foundation. Please obtain professional advice regarding any tax benefits of giving personal property.

Gifts in Kind includes any tangible personal property which the college can use in its educational programs, such as some works of art, certain computer equipment, certain industrial equipment or machinery, books, school supplies, etc. Please contact Eve Belote to discuss a gift in kind at 757.789.1767 or ebelote@es.vccs.edu . Please also obtain professional advice regarding any tax benefits of giving personal property.

Honorary or Memorial gifts recognize special individuals, anniversaries or events. Memorial gifts recognize the lifetime accomplishments of those who have passed away. Honorary or memorial gifts can be unrestricted or designated for a specific use. A letter is sent to the surviving family mentioning the name of the donor, but not the amount of the gift. Named scholarships can be established through memorial / honorary gifts totaling $500 and endowed gifts totaling $10,000.

Your Gift's Impact

Unrestricted Gifts

Unrestricted gifts are allocated to the area of greatest need, as determined by the college administration and the Foundation's Board of Directors.

Endowment

Gifts to endowment create a fund designed to last forever. The Foundation invests all endowment gifts, drawing a limited amount from the return on the invested fund every year for the college's needs. The fund principal remains intact, and may increase with excess investment returns, to continue to provide for the college's needs in future years. Draws from endowment funds may be for the unrestricted needs of the college, or may be for specific purposes named by the donor of the fund.

Scholarships

Helping deserving individuals gain access to education at ESCC is the Foundation's greatest priority. Gifts to current scholarship funds are used now to help today's students pay college tuition and expenses. Gifts to a scholarship endowment create a fund designed to last forever, one that will provide scholarship assistance to students for years to come.

Planned Gifts for Eastern Shore Community College

Your Legacy for Your Community

Hope, achievement, fulfillment, and success - all these things come from an educated mind. Of course, so do more concrete necessities like nurses, accountants, and technicians. People on Virginia's Eastern Shore look to ESCC for the education and skills they need to succeed. Meanwhile, the community as a whole has come to depend on skilled workers who train in ESCC programs.

Whether the motive is gratitude for a good start in a career, or simple understanding that this college brings good things to our community by bringing out the best in its people, many citizens have acted to create a legacy for the college in their estate plans.

Keep your resources as long as you need them.

  • A bequest in your will - Look at some approaches that have worked for alumnae and friends of the school, complete with sample bequest language (click here).

  • Giving with retirement plans - By including ESCC in your IRA or 401(k) plans, you can make a gift without changing your will (click here).

  • Giving with life insurance. Find out more (click here).

Receive an income back from your gift.

  • A secure lifetime income - Charitable gift annuities provide both fixed and secure lifetime payments, and a gift to the school (click here).

  • An income with flexibility - Charitable remainder trusts can provide variable or fixed income for persons, and for a time period, chosen by you (click here).

Pass assets along to heirs more easily, at lower tax.

Giving with retirement plans: Giving part of your retirement plan to the school will save you taxes, whether you are concerned about estate taxes or not (click here).
Join the Legacy Society

Several long-standing supporters of ESCC have joined the Legacy Society by including ESCC in their financial or estate planning and informing the school of their decision. Their gifts, large and small, take many different forms. Common to all planned gift donors is a desire to perpetuate their support for the college's mission to brighten their community's future.

Please let us know. By creating a legacy for your community here at ESCC/joining the Society, you lead by example. If you have included the school in your plans, or when you should do so, please let us know. Doing so creates no legal obligation, but simply allows us to say "thank you," and encourages others to follow your lead.

Please also let us know of any gift that you wish to designate for a particular use. Advance planning will help the college observe any restriction in a way that brings satisfaction to all concerned.

To inform the college and the foundation or your gift, or to hear more about giving, please contact Eve Belote, ESCC Foundation Executive Director, at 757-789-1767, or email ebelote@es.vccs.edu.

John G. and Marie Stella Kenedy Memorial Foundation Funds Scholarships to Assist Deserving University Students

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - For the ninth consecutive year, the John G. and Marie Stella Kenedy Memorial Foundation has pledged $50,000 to fund scholarships to deserving students at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

"The Kenedy Memorial Foundation has had an immense impact on the lives of students at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi," said University President/CEO Dr. Flavius Killebrew. "Their consistent support to further education sets off a domino effect of progress for South Texas."

The 2013-2014 Kenedy Memorial Foundation Scholarship will benefit full-time students pursuing a bachelor's degree at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. To be eligible for the scholarships, recipients from the South Texas area must have a cumulative 3.0 grade point average and demonstrate financial need.

"Receiving the Kenedy Foundation Scholarship is a key component to my future success," said Jacquelyn Vaught, a Kenedy Memorial Scholarship recipient. "And, after having received the scholarship, I am confident that upon graduation I will be capable of teaching to the best of my ability, which would have only been possible with this financial assistance."

Since 2007, more than 240 students have been recipients of the Kenedy Memorial Foundation Scholarship. Each year, a Kenedy Memorial Foundation scholarship luncheon is held on campus giving honors students who receive Kenedy Memorial Foundation scholarships the opportunity to meet Kenedy Foundation members and to thank them for their generosity.

The Kenedy Memorial Foundation is organized exclusively for charitable purposes. Founded in 1961 by Sarita Kenedy East, granddaughter of Mifflin Kenedy and Petra Vela Kenedy, the Foundation has donated more than $200 million to charitable causes and organizations in Texas. In South Texas, where the majority of its contributions have been made, the Foundation is one of the major charity contributors.

Noack family gifts $20,000 for Blinn scholarship

September 19, 2013

Ruth Noack recently graduated from College's Licensed Vocational Nursing program

Less than a month after graduating from one of the most rigorous programs Blinn College offers, Ruth Noack is giving back to those who will follow in her footsteps.

The Blinn College Foundation recently accepted a $20,000 gift from Ruth Noack and her husband Steven to establish an endowed scholarship for students enrolled in Blinn's Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program. The scholarship will be awarded to an LVN student on the College's Brenham campus during the Spring/Summer semester who has demonstrated the ability, character and integrity necessary for a successful career in the nursing field.

Ruth Noack was recently one of 19 new nurses welcomed into the profession during the program's 51st annual pinning ceremony at the Dr. W.W. O'Donnell Performing Arts Center in August. She recently passed the National Council Licensing Examination using the knowledge and skills she learned from Blinn's state-recognized LVN program.

"Ruth knows first-hand the challenges that our LVN students face in achieving their dreams, and her genuine love for the nursing profession has been inspirational to her fellow students and to me," said Joe Al Picone, Blinn Foundation Board President. "I would like to thank Ruth and Steven for this endowed scholarship, which will give future nursing students the assistance they need to further their own goals and will strengthen our healthcare workforce for years to come."

Blinn's vocational nursing program consists of classroom, laboratory and clinical experiences, some of which begin at 6:30 a.m. Hospitals and other health care facilities throughout the Brenham and La Grange communities are utilized for clinical rotations. Students are expected to spend 35-40 hours each week in scheduled, attendance-mandatory activities.

The program's first semester includes 10 courses, and students must pass all their classes to advance to the next semester. To pass, students must score at least a 75 percent, and the program also features a strict attendance policy.

The Foundation supports programs and activities that enhance the quality of education for Blinn College students and expand the educational opportunities for the entire community. While raising funds is an important function, the Foundation also seeks to heighten community awareness of the mission and accomplishments of the College and to promote excellence in education.

For more information on the Foundation and its mission, call 979-830-4107. A complete list of endowed scholarships available to Blinn students can be found at: www.blinn.edu/CatalogPDF/Scholarships.pdf.

Alumnus pays it forward with endowed scholarship at WVU

The idea of paying it forward is at the heart of a recent gift made by alumnus Chet Allen and his wife, Kay, to West Virginia University. The $30,000 gift will endow scholarships for students from West Virginia to study engineering in the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.

Allen is the first to admit he would not have been able to attend WVU if it had not been for the help of scholarship money.

"I grew up in a family of four children with only a loving mother since our father had passed away when we children were very young," Allen said. "We had very little money, received food assistance from the state and worked hard in the summers to buy our own school clothes. We managed to save some money that would help pay for part of our college education but I could not have gone to WVU without the help of scholarship money. I now want to give that same opportunity to other West Virginia residents."

From humble beginnings, Allen, who earned both his bachelor's and master's degree in civil engineering from WVU, has gone on to achieve great success. He currently serves as senior vice president, director of the transportation division and as a member of the board of Gannett Fleming, Inc., a global infrastructure firm that provides planning, design, technology and construction management services for a diverse range of markets and disciplines.

"WVU provided me with the knowledge of civil engineering through wonderful professors," said Allen. "I was fortunate to take these skills to a firm of 2,000 people where I could advance in my career to a very high level. I wanted to show my appreciation back to WVU by providing this scholarship."

The gift was made to the WVU Foundation as part of A State of Minds: The Campaign for West Virginia's University, a $750 million fundraising effort the Foundation is conducting on behalf of the University.
