DUSTIN AND KRISTEN YODER MEMORIAL FOUNDATION, INC. NOTICE OF SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABILITY

The parents of Dustin and Kristen Yoder established the Dustin and Kristen Yoder Memorial Foundation, Inc. in memory of Dustin and Kristen, their only children, both of whom died in a tragic mountain climbing accident in June of 2006 in the Cordillera Blanca Mountains of Peru. Dustin was a 23 year old graduate of Northern Arizona University who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration with a minor in Recreation Management. Kristen was 21 years old and entering her senior year at Northern Arizona University in the Parks and Recreation Department majoring in Recreation Management and was on track to receive her Bachelor of Arts degree in May, 2007. Both Dustin and Kristen lived for outdoor adventure and were very involved in guiding outdoor expeditions and in outdoor leadership education. Kristen and Dustin were both certified in wilderness medicine by the Wilderness Medicine Institute. Dustin also had earned his Emergency Medical Technician certification. Kristen had earned her certification in Outdoor Leadership and had guided trips in the Grand Canyon, Havasupai Falls and various rock climbing and rafting trips. In addition to their organized activities, Dustin and Kristen had also traveled, hiked and climbed extensively with their father and family friends in the United States and abroad. In her resume, Kristen had written: "I only hope someday I can teach and inspire kids to appreciate the outside world as much as I do." It is in this spirit that the children's parents have established the Dustin and Kristen Yoder Memorial Foundation, Inc..

The Foundation provides scholarship funds to deserving individuals who have an interest in outdoor activities, outdoor education and outdoor educational leadership and who are enrolled in, or are enrolling in, outdoor educational programs, outdoor educational courses or programs and/or outdoor leadership educational courses or programs at qualifying educational institutions. Scholarships range in amount from $500.00 to $1,000.00.

Applicants must provide the Foundation with the application, which is attached. Applicants must be applying for acceptance to participate in, have been accepted to participate in, or are currently enrolled in, an outdoor education course or program of study at a qualified educational institution. Once a scholarship is awarded, the Foundation will require the recipient a written statement at the end of the course or program explaining the educational value of the course or program to the recipient and the recipient's plans for continued outdoor education. In addition, the Foundation will require the educational institution in which the recipient is enrolled to provide a report of the recipient's successful completion of the course or program. Payment of scholarship awards will be made directly to the educational institution for the benefit of the scholarship recipient on the condition that if the scholarship recipient withdraws from the course or program prior to completion, any unapplied or unused funds shall be returned to the Foundation.

Please make this information available to any students at your school who meet the criteria above and who may be interested in applying for a scholarship from the Dustin and Kristen Yoder Memorial Foundation.
