International graduate students

The University of Virginia School of Nursing welcomes applications from international students for its graduate degree programs. International applicants need to submit the regular admissions application plus these additional requirements.

1. English language testing.
Applicants who completed a post-secondary University degree in a non-Anglophone country (outside of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc) must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. These scores must be recent (no more than 24 months old). Have the scores sent directly to the University of Virginia (R-5820). Information on these tests can be found at www.toefl.org or www.ielts.org. The University has minimum standards on the TOEFL and IELTS that must be met by international students.

2. Academic credentials evaluation
All international transcripts need to be evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. This will provide a report about the education system of the host country, and 'translate' the grading system to the 4.0 American-style GPA. There are several companies that provide this credentials evaluation, and the University of Virginia cannot recommend one over another. Note that it could take 1 month or more to receive an official credentials evaluation, so you should plan ahead. Some companies that provide this service are:

3. Nursing Credential and License
Applicants must have a RN license from a US state at the time you submit your admissions application. If offered admissions to a graduate program, you must obtain a RN license in Virginia before you can enroll in any classes. If you do not currently have a RN license in the US, consult with the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools ( www.cgfns.org) and the Virginia Board of Nursing ( http://www.dhp.virginia.gov/nursing/) for the steps needed to obtain a Virginia RN license. To transfer your RN license from overseas to the US, you may need to have your license and prior nursing education evaluated by the Commission for Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools ( www.cgfns.org), submit scores from English language testing examinations, and pass the NCLEX-RN examination. If you received your nursing education overseas, this review and testing process could take 1-2 years in total.

4. Visa and Financial Statements
Applicants who receive offers of admissions will be sent additional information on visa applications and financial guarantee statements. You may need to present proof that you have the financial resources to pay for your tuition and living expenses for the full academic degree.

5. Admissions Deadlines
The posted admissions deadlines for the various programs are fixed. International applicants must submit all materials for consideration well before the deadline date to be considered. It is strongly recommended that international applicants have all materials submitted (including English language testing and credentials evaluation) 2 months before the regular application deadlines.

6. Summer English for Academic Purposes course
All international graduate students accepted for the Fall semester must enroll in the summer English for Academic Purposes course administered by the Center for American English Language and Culture. This course covers academic English content as well as material about the University, libraries and city of Charlottesville. Students are reponsible for the fees for this program.

7. Interviews
The admissions committees reserve the right to interview any applicant to the graduate nursing programs at UVa. For most international applicants, this would be a telephone interview. You would be contacted by the Office of Admissions and Student Services if an interview is requested.

Map Your Future

Students who are in their final year of undergraduate study have the option of applying to Fletcher's Map Your Future Program. Map Your Future guarantees admitted applicants a place in the MALD or MIB degree program after completing two to three years of professional work experience in a Fletcher-approved position. This highly selective program is intended for those with excellent academic credentials and preparation, a clear professional focus, foreign language proficiency, and a demonstrated track record of success to date. The program allows for professional development and career exploration while guaranteeing a position in a future class.

It is the responsibility of the student to find an appropriate professional experience in the private, public, or nonprofit sector. Students from any undergraduate major are eligible to apply; however, applicants must be in their final year of university, or have graduated in the past six months, at the time of application.

Evaluative Interview

An evaluative interview is a valuable way for you to share information about yourself and to learn how The Fletcher School will meet your academic and professional goals. The interview is strongly recommended, but is not a required part of the admissions process.Interviews for the Map Your Future Program will be offered the second week of January for those who have completed applications by the December 20 deadline and the first week of June for those who have completed applications by the May 15 deadline.

Scholarship Aid

Map Your Future candidates will not be offered scholarship aid at the time of admission. Rather, admitted and enrolling Map Your Future candidates will be sent an application for scholarship aid the November prior to their year of enrollment. Applications for scholarship aid must be submitted to the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid by January 15 of the year of enrollment. Admitted Map Your Future candidates who submit a scholarship application are guaranteed a minimum award of $5,000. However, scholarship awards are based on a combination of merit and need and may exceed the $5,000 minimum. Admission

Graduate business programs admit only those students who demonstrate aptitude, ability, and scholarship. Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree and take the standardized Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).

For the Admissions Committee to consider a candidate for admission into one of the graduate business programs, the applicant must submit the following materials:

• Official transcripts of every college or university attended. The graduate business office obtains Indiana University transcripts.


• Two letters of recommendation.


• Official score report from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).*


• A nonrefundable application fee.

Admission standards into graduate business programs are maintained by selecting only those candidates who can successfully complete a rigorous and competitive academic program. The program is accessible only to those students of demonstrated aptitude, ability, and scholarship. Admission decisions are based on a composite evaluation of the applicant's:

• GMAT scores


• Undergraduate academic performance measured by GPA


• Two letters of recommendation


• Personal essays


• Professional work experience/résumé

The committee encourages submission of additional supporting information. Applicants whose native language is not English must submit an acceptable Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score or successfully complete Level 12 of The Language Company program.

Interested students must submit all application materials on or before the following deadlines:

Admitted candidates may enter the program at the beginning of any regular semester.

Enrollment Restriction

No graduate student (except those officially admitted to graduate business programs) is allowed to take more than 6 credit hours in graduate business courses under any circumstances.

Academic Standing

Graduate business students whose grade point average (GPA) falls below the 2.75 requirement are placed on academic probation for one semester. If the student's GPA is not raised to the 2.75 level, the student may be placed on additional probation, or may be dismissed from the program. If at any time a student's GPA falls below 2.25, automatic dismissal takes place.

Credit Transfer

Graduate business students may transfer a maximum of 12 credit hours into their graduate program. For coursework to be eligible for transfer, the class must be taken at another AACSB accredited college or university. All classes must be preapproved. The approval process requires the submission of the course syllabus and possibly other course-specific materials. The student is notified in writing if the approval is granted. Only those courses in which a student receives a grade of B or higher transfers. Upon successful completion of a preapproved course at another institution, the student must request that an official transcript be sent to the Office of Graduate Business Programs showing a grade of B or higher. Upon receipt of said transcript the Office of Graduate Business Programs will complete the transfer and notify the student.

Fast-Track Program Option

This option is geared toward recent graduates and is available for students fully admitted to the MBA, MSA or MS-MIT degree programs. Students admitted under this option will be waived from all prerequisite courses** and will have the cost of their GMAT reimbursed ($250) upon satisfactory completion of 6 graduate credit hours in the program.

• Undergraduate degree in business (earned no more than one year prior to the semester of admission) and a CGPA of at least 3.35 from an AACSB accredited business school, OR undergraduate degree in business (earned no more than one year prior to the semester of admission) and a CGPA of at least 3.65 from a non-AACSB regionally accredited school.


• GMAT score of at least 450 (500 for MS-MIT program).

Funding | Graduate | Prospective Students | College of Engineering

The Zachry Department of Civil Engineering has numerous opportunities for its graduate students to obtain financial assistance through Assistantships and Fellowships. Unless the applicant has specified in the application that he or she will have external funding, either by a governmental agency or by industry, the Departmental Graduate Advisor assumes each applicant is in need of financial assistance.

Assistantships, Fellowships and Graduate Scholarships

All selections for financial assistance are competitively based but may also be based on the needs of the department and faculty researchers. Students holding assistantships qualify for Texas A&M employee benefits and graduate students holding either a teaching or research assistantship, or a fellowship of $1000 per year qualify for in-state tuition. Additional fellowships are available through the Office of Graduate Studies.

Texas A&M University offers two types of assistantships: teaching (GAT) or research (GAR). These assistantships normally provide a stipend of $1200 to $1400/month, depending on a student's degree status, and also pay the student's tuition and health benefit costs. Fees are not covered by these assistantships.

The department has numerous graduate fellowships from both endowed and departmental funds. For the 2013-2014 school year, over $300,000 is available to our graduate students as fellowships. For students who are not Texas residents, receiving a fellowship of $1000 or more provides them with the additional benefit of reducing their tuition rate to the in-state rate (basically reducing the rate by two-thirds).

Decisions on who to employ as research and teaching assistants, and to whom fellowship funds should be given are made by the faculty. Applicants and students should contact the graduate student advisor in their area of study to indicate their interest in being considered for any of these sources of funding.

All students holding an assistantship must be registered for a minimum of nine credit hours during the fall and spring semester and six credit hours during the summer semester. This is a University requirement and cannot be waived.

The department also regularly nominates entering students for University fellowships, such as the Association of Former Students Graduate Merit Fellowship. Students interested in these fellowships should contact the graduate student advisor in their area of study. The deadlines for these fellowships should be noted - please make sure your application is submitted by December for consideration. Applicants should also note that these fellowships are given only to students entering in the fall term.

Application Deadlines

To be eligible for all teaching assistantships, research assistantships and fellowships, including merit and diversity fellowships, you must apply by January 1st for admission the following Fall semester. Applications for the fall semester not seeking financial aid will continue to be accepted until March 15th . To be considered for all teaching assistantships, research assistantships and fellowships you must apply by June 1st for admission the following Spring semester.

All documents have to be received by the deadlines listed above. Documents include official transcripts and records, official test scores from GRE and TOEFL, three letters of recommendation, statement of purpose and your resume or curriculum vitae (optional). If the application fees are not paid your application will not be processed and will not be sent forward for a decision.

International students must meet the International Student Service deadlines for the documents which are require for the processing of their I-20. Failure to meet those deadlines may result in not receiving the I-20 in time for entrance into Texas A&M University.

Water Scholars Program

Note for master's students with water-related research interests: The WATer Engineering Research (WATER) Scholars program provides scholarships to engineering graduate students pursuing a master's degree and who have an interest in water-related research. Scholarships are awarded in civil engineering (emphases in environmental engineering, water resources engineering, coastal engineering).

How much will it cost?

The cost of attendance (COA) is an estimate of what it costs the typical student to attend Texas A&M University. Don't be startled by the sticker price of a college education. Your cost of attendance (COA) doesn't just cover your college tuition; it takes into account your basic living expenses. When comparing financial aid packages from other schools, make sure you are comparing the total cost of attending that school, not just the total financial aid awarded. It is important for you to budget and make wise decisions regarding how to utilize the financial aid funds you receive.
