Stillman Receives $27,500 Gift from Parents of Former Coach Frank DiCocco

Lou and Kathy DiCocco of the H.O.P.E. Foundation For A Better Tomorrow presented Stillman with $27,500 to begin an endowed scholarship for student athletes and finance the College's first Shaping Champions Scholarship in Memory of Coach Frank D. B. DiCocco.Pictured, from left to right, on a balcony overlooking Stillman Stadium are Interim President Peter Millet, Kathy DiCocco, Lou DiCocco, Head Football Coach Teddy Keaton, and Vice President for Institutional Advancement Anthony Holloman.

H.O.P.E was founded by the couple's son Frank DiCocco, a former Stillmanfootball coach and mentor to youth who published ten books, including The Playbook for Manhood: A Game Plan for Being a REAL Man. DiCocco, who suffered from bone marrow failure, died on April 30, 2013 at the age of 29.

"Two years ago Frank asked if we could start a foundation that would help young athletes," Kathy DiCocco stated. "He coached at Stillman and at high schools in Florida, Connecticut, Virginia, South Carolina, and Massachusetts. While working with youth, he noticed that some athletes had no family to go home to and no dinner. He had a heart for the young and he would sometimes buy them dinner or take them shopping to buy clothes. When he was a coach at a high school in Florida, he paid one student's flight to go out of state to interview for a scholarship. He also ran a couple of fundraisers for a girl with cancer to help with her medical expenses. He would buy t-shirts to give to kids, and give baskets to families at Christmas time. The more people we meet, the more we hear about things he did for others, so we're trying to keep it going through the foundation."

The day after their son's funeral, Kathy DiCocco says that she and her husband "kicked into gear," determined to continue his legacy of generosity. In the past four months, they have given scholarships to three schools, sponsored three students to attend summer camps, and planned several fundraisers.

"We could have mailed our checks to Stillman, but we used to come for football games when our son was coaching here, so we decided to deliver the checks in person."

The criteria for receiving the Shaping Champions Scholarship includes financial need and character. "It's for an athlete with need, but one who also exhibits the character traits my son wrote about in his books. One who has a strong work ethic and the potential to go on to be successful in life."

On his website, Coach DiCocco wrote, "My mission is to build men of character, men of values, men of purpose, and men of honor. My aim is to help shape the lives of others in a positive and meaningful way: a way that inspires individuals to help create a better and more hopeful world for us all."

Coach Keaton said that Frank DiCocco embodied the excellent character traits that he wrote about and that, through the H.O.P.E Foundation and the endowed scholarship, DiCocco's mission will continue. "He was all about helping others. Stillman was his first college coaching job. He felt that he had been blessed and he wanted to be a blessing to someone else. So he wanted to start a scholarship for a Stillman athlete. He wanted to help by giving opportunities to those who didn't have many opportunities. He wanted to help the poor. He wanted to help the needy. He is a clear example of a person who felt that he was put on this earth to be a servant."

A College of Social Work Legend: Betty Piccard | FSU College of Social Work

A College of Social Work Legend: Betty Piccard

Elizabeth Koalska Piccard, better known as Betty, was a valued faculty member of the College of Social Work from 1965 until 1993, serving for many years as the Undergraduate Program Director. Recently, on August 29, 2013 she died peacefully in her sleep in Tallahassee, a place she called home since 1953.

Betty was born (January 10, 1925) and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. She graduated summa cum laude with her Bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota, and earned her MSW soon afterwards. During World War II, she served as part of the U.S. Navy's WAVES program (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). Immediately following the war, she married Paul Piccard and in 1953 they moved to Tallahassee, Florida. As soon as the youngest of her five children entered school Betty began working for Leon County Mental Health Association and joined the FSU School of Social Work in 1965. She was a vital member of the faculty, positively impacting colleagues, students, and the community alike.

She was also an early member of the League of Women Voters and a lifelong dedicated feminist. Betty taught women's issues courses for many years, helping students to appreciate the complexity of women's developmental issues and the effects of sexism on women of all ages. She also wrote Introduction to Social Work: A Primer. She took special interest in teaching undergraduate social work students and even set up the Koalska Scholarship for undergraduate students whose parents did not attend college and demonstrated financial need.

"Betty Piccard was a model of excellence in social work practice and education," Dean Nick Mazza said about his long-standing friend and colleague. "Her lifelong commitment to advancing the rights of women and girls forms a legacy to what we hold paramount in our College and the profession."

Although Betty retired in 1993, she remained an active member of the College of Social Work and the FSU community up until her health prevented her participation.

Advanced Studies in ESOL Education/Bilingual Education (Master, Specialist, and Doctoral Degrees)

The ESOL/Bilingual Education program area will provide students with a thorough understanding of second language learning and teaching, bilingualism, and multiculturalism. The ESOL/Bilingual program area offers the following graduate degrees:

  • Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Master of Arts in Education (M.A.E.) in Curriculum and Instruction with ESOL Specialization. Master's degree seeking students in the "traditional" (non-ProTeach) program can choose from two degree options: the M.Ed. or the M.A.E. The Master of Education (M.Ed.), a 36-credit hour program, affords students the option of choosing to conduct a research study with thesis (thesis-option) for 6 of the 36 credit hours or a "special project" option for 6 of the 36 credit hours. Examples of prior special projects include curriculum design and development, program evaluation, and international projects about the teaching and learning of second language(s). The Master of Arts in Education (M.A.E.) is the degree option for students seeking 36 hours of coursework alone. For additional details, students should email their advisor directly.

  • Specialist (EdS) and Doctorate (EdD and PhD) in Curriculum and Instruction with ESOL specialization. Students may earn a specialist or a doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in ESOL/Bilingual Education. Students without previous course work related to K-12 ESOL are expected to complete the 18-credit sequence of core courses. Advanced graduate specialization seminars are offered annually by ESOL/Bilingual Education program faculty. Past seminars have included: L2 Literacy, Multilingual Issues From a Global Perspective, Language and Educational Issues in Migrant Populations, and Teacher Preparation and ELL Achievement.

Students enrolled in the graduate program develop their program of study in consultation with their advisor to individually tailor the program to their interests and needs. The following six core courses (18 credits) form the foundation of the graduate program (master's, specialist, and doctoral degrees) in ESOL/Bilingual Education.

  • TSL 6245: Principles of Language for ESOL Teachers

  • FLE 6167: Cross-Cultural Communication for Educators

  • FLE 6165: Bilingual and Bicultural Education

  • TSL 6145: Curriculum and Materials Development for ESOL K-12

  • TSL 6373: Methods of Teaching English as a Second Language

  • TSL 6440: ESOL Testing and Evaluation

Note the following two options for ESOL endorsement/certification:

  • Teacher candidates who are already certified or earning initial certification in Elementary Education, English Language Arts, Special Education, and Foreign Language Education in Florida may apply directly to the Florida Department of Education for an ESOL endorsement. Additionally, teacher certification in ESOL may be obtained by taking the Florida Teacher Certification Exam in ESOL.

  • Teacher candidates without initial Florida teacher certification in another field may obtain one of the advanced degrees (specified above) in Curriculum and Instruction and pursue ESOL teacher certification in Florida by taking the Florida Teacher Certification Exam in ESOL.

Students seeking admission to any graduate program must meet the requirements of the School of Teaching & Learning and of the University of Florida Graduate School. The ESOL/Bilingual Education program area accepts applications for admission on an ongoing or rolling admissions basis. Applicants are encouraged to apply by January for admission the following fall semester. Applicants to the Ph.D. program who wish to be considered for scholarships and/or fellowships should apply no later than mid-December of the year prior to admission (e.g., the following fall semester).

Nova Southeastern University Receives Its Largest Title V Grant Award From The U.S. Department of Education | NSU News Center

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla.-Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has announced that it has been awarded a multi-million dollar "Cooperative Development Grant" by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), totaling approximately $3.9 million. The grant from the DOE's Hispanic-Serving Institutions Division, is the single largest Title V award received by the university.

The Title V funding will be used to develop programs and services to better meet the needs of students pursuing high-demand science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) related programs and careers, and in particular, those students focused on academically challenging careers in computer science and computer information systems (CS/CIS).

NSU is one of only four institutions in the nation to receive the Cooperative Development Grant and the only college or university in the state of Florida to receive this award for FY 2013.

"Nova Southeastern University is pleased to be a recipient of an award of this magnitude, and for the Department of Education's recognition of our university's role in providing quality education to students from diverse backgrounds," said NSU President and CEO George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D. "NSU has one of the most diverse student populations in Florida and the Title V award will allow the university to further our commitment in providing an array of innovative programs and access to students from traditionally underrepresented communities. Dr. Meline Kevorkian and Dr. Greg Simco are to be commended for their work in leading this effort on behalf of the university."

Cooperative Development Grants are awarded to eligible Hispanic-Serving Institutions that are collaborating with one or more colleges or universities of higher education. NSU, a highly-rated provider of degree opportunities for Hispanic and other minority student populations, will serve as the lead institution, in collaboration with Broward College, a college with which NSU has had strong collaborations previously.

A joint statement issued by co-grant administrators NSU Associate Provost Meline Kevorkian, Ed.D., and Professor Gregory Simco, Ph.D., of NSU's Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences, indicated that four-year colleges are increasingly becoming the school of choice for students to begin their STEM education and careers. They believe it to be imperative that institutions such as NSU be more intentional in their efforts to collaborate with academic institutions such as Broward College, to ensure that student pathways to baccalaureate and graduate degrees are smooth and unobstructed.

NSU has been nationally ranked in the top 25 institutions for awarding degrees to Hispanic students according to the May, 2013 edition of Hispanic Outlook. In addition, Hispanic Outlook for May, 2012, ranked NSU among the top five colleges or universities nationally for awarding master's and doctoral degrees, and 1st nationally in awarding 1st professional degrees to Hispanic students.

NSU's cooperative development plan will provide outreach, academic support services, and fully supported degree pathways for Hispanic, Latino and other diverse student populations in the STEM academic areas. In addition, NSU will strengthen the rigor of its CS/CIS programs through improved technology, more effective instruction and training, including project-based learning, integrated student success strategies, and mentoring.

Scholarships

One of the most important steps to obtaining a great education is finding a way to pay for it. These links will guide you through several financial support opportunities that can help your road to success!

Institutional Scholarships, such as the ones available through the Foundation for Seminole State, are awarded based on academic merit, special talent or other criteria established by Seminole State College. While students do not necessarily have to show need to receive this type of award, they must still complete a FAFSA and have the results sent to Seminole State. Institutional scholarships must be coordinated with other types of financial assistance and may reduce students' eligibility for federal or state need-based aid.

Private Scholarships are awarded based on criteria established by organizations and agencies other than Seminole State College. These awards must be coordinated with other types of financial assistance and may reduce students' eligibility for federal or state need-based aid.

Florida Bright Futures Scholarships are awarded by the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) for the Fall and Spring terms based on academic merit. (Summer funds may also be available, as determined by FDOE.) Funds cover up to 45 credit hours per academic year. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of six non-remedial credit hours per term to be eligible.
