Noack family gifts $20,000 for Blinn scholarship

Less than a month after graduating from one of the most rigorous programs Blinn College offers, Ruth Noack is giving back to those who will follow in her footsteps.

The Blinn College Foundation recently accepted a $20,000 gift from Ruth Noack and her husband Steven to establish an endowed scholarship for students enrolled in Blinn's Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program. The scholarship will be awarded to an LVN student on the College's Brenham campus during the Spring/Summer semester who has demonstrated the ability, character and integrity necessary for a successful career in the nursing field.

Ruth Noack was recently one of 19 new nurses welcomed into the profession during the program's 51st annual pinning ceremony at the Dr. W.W. O'Donnell Performing Arts Center in August. She recently passed the National Council Licensing Examination using the knowledge and skills she learned from Blinn's state-recognized LVN program.

"Ruth knows first-hand the challenges that our LVN students face in achieving their dreams, and her genuine love for the nursing profession has been inspirational to her fellow students and to me," said Joe Al Picone, Blinn Foundation Board President. "I would like to thank Ruth and Steven for this endowed scholarship, which will give future nursing students the assistance they need to further their own goals and will strengthen our healthcare workforce for years to come."

Blinn's vocational nursing program consists of classroom, laboratory and clinical experiences, some of which begin at 6:30 a.m. Hospitals and other health care facilities throughout the Brenham and La Grange communities are utilized for clinical rotations. Students are expected to spend 35-40 hours each week in scheduled, attendance-mandatory activities.

The program's first semester includes 10 courses, and students must pass all their classes to advance to the next semester. To pass, students must score at least a 75 percent, and the program also features a strict attendance policy.

The Foundation supports programs and activities that enhance the quality of education for Blinn College students and expand the educational opportunities for the entire community. While raising funds is an important function, the Foundation also seeks to heighten community awareness of the mission and accomplishments of the College and to promote excellence in education.

Scholarships

Many scholarships at the College of Veterinary Medicine have been established through gifts from alumni, friends and other sources of private support. A number of these carry, in addition to financial need, eligibility criteria and preferences based on the donors' interests in animal health, the College and our students. For example, some donors wish their scholarship awards to go to students who are interested in a particular type of veterinary medicine, such as equine medicine or feline medicine. Other scholarships carry preferences for students from particular cities, counties or geographic areas. To ensure effective matching, students eligible for scholarship assistance through these privately funded awards must complete a Student Statement of Personal Interest. This essay should include:

• reasons for pursuing a D.V.M. degree


• species-oriented interests in veterinary medicine (one or two sentences)


• goals after graduation (graduate study?internship or residency?private practice?)


• activities, community/volunteer involvement


• other personal notes you think would help the scholarship committee in making awards

Scholarship Acknowledgment Letter

Expressions of appreciation for these gifts are vital to our efforts to maintain and increase scholarship assistance. Therefore, we expect each award recipient to write a short acknowledgement letter to the donor. Failure to do so will be interpreted by the College as a lack of interest in being considered for such assistance. Eligibility for scholarship support is also contingent upon the student's agreement to allow his or her name to be released to the donor, along with the amount of the award.

Format

Future contributions to scholarships depend on excellent stewardship in which students play an important role. As you may never meet your donor in person, it is extremely important for them to meet you on paper.

To thank them personally we ask that you write a one-page thank you letter which includes the following:

- One paragraph on why their gift is important to you

- One to two paragraphs on your veterinary ambitions and your personal interests

New endowed scholarship to benefit Senior GC scholar-athletes

GEORGETOWN, KY - Female and male Georgetown College athletes who exemplify academics, leadership, and good character on- and off-the-field are eligible to benefit in their senior year from a new endowed scholarship established by Converse, Inc.

The Reed-Allen Character in Sports Endowed Scholarship, as it will be known, honors Hall of Fame sports journalist Billy Reed, a former Executive Scholar-in-Residence at Georgetown College, and David Allen, Vice President and General Manager, North America Converse.

Under Mr. Allen's leadership, Converse, Inc. was the principal underwriter for the 2012 40 ^th anniversary reunion at Georgetown College and in Lexington of the entire 1972 Olympic basketball team. Mr. Reed, then director of the College's Academy for Character in Sport, along with 1971 Georgetown College alumnus Kenny Davis, who captained the Olympic team, spearheaded that first-ever gathering of these outstanding former athletes.

Nominations for the new scholarship may be made in a student's junior year by coaches or faculty members no later than November 15. Nominees must be full-time students, maintain a 2.5 or above GPA, be a demonstrated leader of good academics and character, and have financial need.

A committee comprised of former 1972 Olympic basketball team members and Converse, Inc. staff will review the nominations and make recommendations to the College's Office of Student Financial Planning. Final selection will be determined by the College's president and athletic director.

Recipients will be announced at the annual Athletic Hall of Fame banquet. The award, divided equally between a female and male athlete, is then available for use during the students' senior year.
