The scholars, who are mostly from Central and South America, have been in the United States for up to two years, researching subjects ranging from ocean engineering, to accounting and finance, to agriculture. At Simmons, the women will develop specific action plans as they prepare to re-adjust to their home countries and cultures, to help them fully realize the depth of their scholarly experiences in the United States and map their next steps as scholarly leaders.

"Successful reentry is one of the most important and often most overlooked elements of international exchange programs, and we are delighted to host these women leaders during this transition," said President Helen Drinan. "With our top-notch executive education programs, Simmons is poised to support their continued leadership development."

Led by Patricia Deyton, a professor and director of the Center for Gender in Organizations at the Simmons School of Management, the women will participate in a series of interactive workshops and activities to strengthen their knowledge and growth as effective leaders. Among the activities the women will participate in is a panel discussion with Boston women leaders, including:

Simmons College

BOSTON (April 4, 2008) - A Fulbright award-one of the world's most prestigious academic research scholarships-has been awarded to Chelsea Graham, a senior at Simmons College in Boston.

Graham will use the award to study maternal diabetes in Mexico City. Diabetes is the number one killer of women in Mexico.

The highly competitive Fulbright award was established in 1946 as part of the Fulbright Program to foster international research, understanding and collaboration. Scholarship winners use the award to conduct research during a year of foreign study. In the Western hemisphere, only 151 Fulbright awards were given for 2008-09.

Graham, from Center Harbor, NH, will graduate from Simmons College in May with degrees in biochemistry and Spanish. She developed her study project and proposal during her junior and senior years.

Graham's study will analyze self-care practices of women with gestational diabetes in the nutrition therapy program at the Instituto Nacional de Perinatologia in Mexico City. She will follow women before and after pregnancy to determine why they do or do not follow their self-care regime, with the goal of helping to contribute to the improvement of intervention methods.

Graham said she was inspired to do research on the topic after traveling to Nicaragua during a Simmons College service-learning course. She has also worked with Latino/a patients with type 2 diabetes in the Latino Initiative Program at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.

Simmons College is a nationally recognized private university in Boston. It includes an undergraduate college for women and graduate programs for women and men in social work, health studies, management, library and information science and the liberal arts.

UNT student wins nationally competitive scholarship to attend conference | News | University of North Texas

DENTON (UNT), Texas - Tyler Brewer, a second-year Master of Public Administration student at the University of North Texas, received the nationally competitive Edwin O. Stene Academic Scholarship from ICMA, the International City/County Management Association, to attend the group's conference Sept. 22 - 25 in Boston.

In addition to the $1,000 stipend, the Stene Scholarship - which is named in memory of a Kansas University professor - provides the recipient with registration to the ICMA Annual Conference.

"I'll meet city managers and public officials from all across the country and get a four-day sweeping overview of their ideas and how things are run across the country," Brewer said. "It's a huge honor."

Brewer, whose father runs a nonprofit called the Downtown Alliance that promotes economic development in San Antonio, said he hopes to work in city management after graduation.

"I was always exposed to and interested in how cities run and their dynamics," said Brewer, who earned an undergraduate degree in history from the University of Washington. "And then after I graduated, I ended up working for a year for an urban planner in Seattle, and that just furthered my interest and exposure in city issues and how cities are run. UNT's program is really highly ranked, so I decided to come back to Texas and pursue my MPA degree and turn my interest in city issues into a tangible career opportunity."

Brewer works as a management intern with the Town of Fairview, where he receives day-to-day experience in city management that helps him apply what he learns in class.

"This would be the most rewarding career path for me, to directly see how my actions are helping people out and maximizing the public good," he said.
