Notre Dame College will host the 2013 North Eastern Ohio Education Association (NEOEA) Day seminar on "Social Skills for Building Social Competence" from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, October 18, at the College's Performing Arts Center.
The program, featuring Jay Berk, a licensed clinical psychologist and expert in working with children, adolescents and families, includes sessions on "teenager talk," iPad applications, unspoken rules and sensitivity to student differences, among others.
The NEOEA Day conference is open to the public and to current educators, education and psychology students and social service professionals, who are eligible to receive 5.5 contact credit hours upon completion.
During the seminar, participants will explore the absence of social skills and the impact of poor communications skills among children, learn to help adolescents connect socially vital skills along with appropriate humor to make and keep friends and discover how to assist young adults in developing successful social group skills. In addition, the program will aid those who work with students in becoming more sensitive to the overall social and mental health needs of youth.
Berk, who earned a master's degree in clinical counseling psychology from Cleveland State University and a doctorate in clinical psychology from Union Institute, has provided training and conducted workshops throughout the country, including at many universities and in Ohio schools districts. His specialties include treating clients with stress and anxiety issues, learning differences, Attention Deficit Disorder, Asperger syndrome, Tourette syndrome and several behavioral disturbances.
He is a consultant for the Cleveland Clinic, as well as hospitals in Australia and England, and has written a manual for UNICEF, which is used by teachers working with children in Bosnia.
