Symeon Symeonides, dean emeritus and professor at Willamette University College of Law, was elected to the Institut de Droit International, the Institute of International Law, at its September meeting in Tokyo.
The Nobel Peace Prize-winning institute was founded in Belgium 140 years ago by a group of prominent international law scholars. Its members study critical and timely legal issues, proposing changes to international law while promoting peace and working to strengthen compliance. Its 132 members include those practicing public law, "publicists," and members that practice private law, "privatists." Symeonides is one of only two American privatists in the distinguished organization.
"Dean Emeritus Symeonides' election represents a tremendous recognition of his talents and contributions to the law," says Stephen Thorsett, President of Willamette University. "This honor reflects the caliber of scholarship and the quality of faculty at Willamette University."

Symeonides joined Willamette in 1999. Among many contributions, positions and honors, he is the president of the International Association of Legal Science, the former president of the American Society of Comparative Law, a member of the International Academy of Comparative Law, the American Law Institute and a fellow of the European Law Institute.
