Office of International Services

Academic, Need-Based, and Country-Specific Scholarships

Scholarships are by far the best form of financial aid to receive because they do not require repayment and do not have a work requirement.

You may be eligible for certain scholarships because of your field of study, because of specific work you have done, or because of your strong academic record.

Indiana University Bloomington offers three types of partial-fee scholarships through the Office of International Services (OIS).

Academic Scholarships

IU is one of a few public universities in the United States that offers merit-based awards to international freshmen.

IU awards a limited number of Global Engagement Scholarships to incoming international freshmen each year. For fall 2014, these competitive, merit-based scholarships range from $1,000 to $11,000 per year. The awards are renewable for four years. Students are considered for these awards based on an overall assessment of the information provided in the IU application for admission. No separate scholarship application is required. Applicants must submit all admission materials to IU by February 1 for consideration.

For more information about the IU Global Engagement Scholarship and other awards, please visit the Office of Scholarships website.

Need-Based Scholarships

Students who need financial assistance may apply for a need-based scholarship through iStart year-round. The amounts of the awards vary from $500 to $2,000 (or more, in rare cases), depending on the level of need and the availability of funds. Please complete all elements of the e-form. Including a budget is helpful as well. Decisions are generally made within two weeks of when the application is submitted, and the scholarships are posted directly to the students' bursar accounts.

Country-Specific Scholarships

Generous alumni have created need-based scholarships for students who are from specific countries and who meet other criteria:

OIS's Fee Assistance Committee reviews completed applications in April and presents scholarships to the recipients before the end of the spring semester.

Priority for all scholarships is typically given to students who are nearing graduation.

You can apply for all OIS scholarships through one general application in iStart. Log in and click the Scholarship Application link in the Insurance and Finances menu. Visit iStart "
