IOM Report: Best Care at Lower Cost: The Path to Continuously Learning Health Care in America

The Institute of Medicine's Report on Best Care at Lower Cost identifies three major imperatives for change: the rising complexity of modern health care, unsustainable cost increases, and outcomes below the system's potential. The authors also point out that emerging tools like computing power, connectivity, team-based care, and systems engineering techniques-tools that were previously unavailable-can serve as catalysts for change, and are already being put to successful use in pioneering health care organizations. On June 24, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court essentially upheld current university policies related to race-based admission decisions by remanding the Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin case back to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals for reconsideration. This action did not challenge or overturn the legal framework for considering race as a factor in college admissions as set by previous court challenges, including the Grutter v. Bollinger case from 2003. "AACN joins with the larger higher education community to applaud the Supreme Court for continuing to support race-conscious admissions practices as a means to diversifying student populations," said AACN President Jane Kirschling. "Nursing's academic leaders have long recognized a strong connection between a culturally diverse nursing workforce and the ability to provide quality, culturally competent patient care. Achieving this goal must be a priority for the profession and requires action at the individual school level."
