UNU-WIDER Visiting Scholars Programme: Apply by 30 September

The Visiting Scholars Programme of the UNU World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) gives qualified scholars an opportunity spend a 2- to 3-month "sabbatical" at UNU-WIDER in Helsinki to research topics related to development and/or global economic issues. During this time, each visiting scholar prepares one or more papers to be considered for publication in the UNU-WIDER working paper series, and presents a seminar in his/her field of research.

The programme is open to applicants who have a PhD degree in economics or a development-related discipline. A good publication record is an advantage.

In collaboration with the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), UNU-WIDER reserves a number of visiting scholar positions for researchers from African countries. Applicants who are eligible will automatically be designated as a potential AERC grant recipient.

The programme provides a monthly stipend of EUR 2,500 (as a contribution towards travel), accommodation and other out-of-pocket expenses, and medical insurance. (Health insurance must be arranged privately by each candidate.) Developing country scholars may apply for a supplementary travel grant.

UNU-WIDER accepts applications for its Visiting Scholars Programme just once each year, during the month of September. The deadline for submission of applications is 30 September.

Short-listed applicants will be informed by e-mail by the end of October, and must confirm their decision to take up UNU-WIDER's offer within two weeks after being contacted.

For more information, or to access the online application form, please see the Visiting Scholars page on the UNU-WIDER website.
