Southern Miss Alumnus Endows Scholarship in Honor of Jeff and Diane Hammond

Southern Miss Director of Athletics Bill McGillis is proud to announce that alumnus Chuck Scianna has established an endowment that will provide three annual scholarships in honor of former Golden Eagle Director of Athletics Jeff Hammond, and his wife, Diane.

His initial gift of $350,000 endows this scholarship which recognizes the love of Southern Miss by the Hammonds, both graduates of the University.

"The scholarship fund was set up to honor the dedication of Jeff and Diane Hammond," said Scianna. "It is to honor their service to the University, the community and to the state of Mississippi as well as to honor the student-athletes in an effort to give more student-athletes the opportunity to attend The University of Southern Mississippi."

Jeff Hammond is a retired major general in the United States Army and former Golden Eagle quarterback for Southern Miss from 1976-78. He currently serves in the role of Special Assistant to the President for Military and Veterans Student Affairs at Southern Miss.

The scholarships are awarded to individuals that best demonstrate the attributes of Duty, Honor, Dignity and Respect. The 2013 recipients were Golden Eagle football players Cole Weeks, Dominique Sullivan and Michael Smith.

"We are so appreciative of Chuck and (wife) Rita and this very generous gift," said McGillis. "This gift does a couple of things, one it honors Jeff and Diane Hammond for their service to the University, our country, to the state of Mississippi, and it also allows us to support student-athletes, something that is near and dear to both the Sciannas and the Hammonds."

Scianna is president of Sim-Tex L.P., one of the leading suppliers of API-certified oil country tubular goods. A 1975 graduate, Scianna's love for Southern Miss is evident in the $6 million gift commitment he made toward construction of a new building for the College of Business. Named Scianna Hall, the 93,000-square-foot facility is currently under construction and set to open in fall, 2014.

Southern Miss supporters are encouraged to donate to this scholarship endowment by calling the Southern Miss Athletic Foundation at 601-266-5299.
