AACN and the CDC Announce New Public Health Fellowship Opportunity








Last August, AACN commenced a new five-year cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help build capacity in the public health nursing workforce. This landmark agreement marked the first time that a national nursing organization was invited to partner with the CDC in a manner consistent with arrangements in place for associations representing physicians and public health professionals.


AACN and the CDC are pleased to announce that a new nurse fellowship is now available through this collaborative effort that focuses on Managing Chronic Conditions in Schools. Annually, in collaboration with the Harvard Macy Institute, the Arnold P. Gold Foundation awards scholarships (up to $5,000) to support Gold Humanism Scholars. These scholarships support health profession educators working to develop and enhance educational projects focused on achieving humanistic patient care that can be replicated across a variety of healthcare settings.
The Harvard Macy Institute brings together healthcare professionals, educators, and leaders to discuss the critical challenges of the day and design innovative solutions that have a lasting impact on the way medicine is practiced and students are educated. This year two of the award winners are from the nursing community, see details of winners below.

Project Description: Using a simulated nursing unit with students as patient actors, the project will emphasize the development of empathy and professional and humanistic values through faculty-developed scripted scenarios and problems that will require a patient centered approach to care.

Project Description: The project will develop a novel curriculum that examines patient engagement and patient centered care as a practice philosophy for incoming Nurse Practitioner students. AACN is now accepting applications for the second annual Faculty Policy Intensive to be held March 24-27, 2014 in Washington, DC. This fully-funded, four-day immersion program is designed for faculty of AACN member schools who are interested in actively pursuing a role in healthcare and nursing policy. The Faculty Policy Intensive offers participants the opportunity to enhance existing knowledge of policy and advocacy through sessions that will strengthen understanding of the legislative process and the dynamic relationships between federal departments and agencies, national nursing organizations, and the individual advocate. Up to eight faculty members will be accepted through the application process. Outstanding Dissertation and Capstone Awards



This AACN awards program recognizes and showcases outstanding dissertations and capstone projects completed by students in research- and practice-focused doctoral programs. Two awards will be presented at AACN's annual Doctoral Education Conference , in Naples, Florida, January 29 - February 1, 2014:




  • nursing, DNS, or DNSc programs. A dissertation is an original research project that focuses on advancing nursing science and developing new evidence with the potential to guide nursing practice.Excellence in Advancing Nursing Science Award for an outstanding dissertation from a student in a PhD in


  • Excellence in Advancing Nursing Practice Award for an outstanding capstone project from a student in a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. A capstone project demonstrates high-level mastery of an area of advanced nursing practice and focuses on the translation of evidence into practice.

AACN and CNC Now Accepting Applications for the CNL Vanguard Award

AACN and CNC are now accepting applications for the CNL Vanguard Award. The deadline to apply is October 11, 2013. This national award recognizes a certified CNL for innovative and outstanding professional performance and advocacy of the CNL role. In addition, the award promotes the contributions of the CNL in transforming healthcare. The 2014 recipient will be recognized at the CNL Summit, January 16-18, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Orange County in Anaheim, CA.


CNC Seeks Volunteers to Serve as Item Writers
CNC is recruiting volunteers to serve as item writers. To apply, please submit a brief letter explaining your interest in serving as an item writer and summarize your professional experience. The letter must be submitted with a current resume or curriculum vitae. In March 2013, The National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded grant funding to the City of Hope Medical Center, in partnership with AACN, to prepare Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) faculty to integrate palliative care content into DNP program curricula. This new project titled, Integrating Palliative Oncology Care into Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Education and Clinical Practice, will give nursing faculty the tools and resources needed to educate DNP graduates on how to provide compassionate and evidence-based palliative care to the 1.6 million Americans diagnosed with cancer this year, plus the 13.7 million Americans who are living with a history of cancer. Using the grant funding, free registration, plus up to $350 in hotel lodging expenses will be offered to nursing faculty interested in attending this two-day train-the-trainer course. Faculty will be chosen competitively based on their ability to disseminate the curriculum content to other faculty, students, and clinical partners. The first of four national train-the-trainer courses will be held February 27-28, 2014 in Glendale, CA. The second national course will be held June 26-27, 2014 in Washington, DC. Join your colleagues at an upcoming event to learn more about how to leverage NursingCAS to effectively manage your admissions process. NursingCAS is the online, centralized application service for nursing schools that provides an online application for students and web-based admissions management software for schools called WebAdMIT. These free events are open to deans, admissions professionals, IT staff, faculty, nursing school recruiters, advisors, and other decision-makers involved in the admissions process. Sessions will feature content for prospective and participating schools.
