Corsicana - An international student from The Gambia is the latest recipient of the Gloria La'Shawn Gee Memorial Scholarship at Navarro College.

Baboucarr Sanneh is a native the African nation of The Gambia. Baboucarr is majoring in computer engineering with a cumulative grade point average of 3.85. He plans to transfer to the University of Texas at Arlington following his graduation from Navarro in May 2013.

The scholarship is in memory of Gloria La'Shawn Gee. The daughter of Buford and Gloria Gee, La'Shawn was born in 1983. An athletic young lady, she was loved music and was active in her church. In addition, she was a member of the Drane Intermediate School band, PRIDE, and 4-H. In August 1995, after her 12th birthday, La'Shawn collapsed and passed away with inflammation of the heart while participating in a tennis clinic on the campus of Navarro College.

Following her death, La'Shawn's family and friends established a scholarship in her memory to assist students attending Navarro College. Twelve different students have received the award since its inception in 1995.

"We appreciate the Gee family including the Navarro College Foundation in honoring the memory of La'Shawn by helping students pursue their academic goals," said Dr. Tommy Stringer, director of the Navarro College Foundation, which administers the scholarship.

The Gee family hosts musical events each year to raise funds for the scholarship. The next event is scheduled for Nov. 9 at the Cook Education Center on the Navarro College campus.
