Merit-based Scholarships | Scholarships | Costs and Financial Aid | Admission | Furman University


We offer over 100 renewable scholarships to freshmen who demonstrate a strong ability to succeed based on their academic achievements, commitment to the community, passion for leading, or exemplary talents. Furman's Merit-based Scholarships are highly competitive awards which aim to recognize those students who show the potential and promise to make an impact in Furman's community.


Apply for any of our Merit-based Scholarships through Furman's online scholarship application unless otherwise noted in the scholarship description below. Please note that you must submit your Common Application before gaining access to Furman's scholarship applications. Upon submitting your Common Application, you will receive a confirmation email with your account login information. Use this log in to the Status Checker so that you may view the online scholarship applications.


Application deadline is January 15, and Merit-based Scholarship notification occurs in early April.


Herman W. Lay Scholarships



    Full tuition, weighted average room costs, board, and student fees

Awarded to incoming students each year who have displayed exceptional academic achievement and distinctive personal accomplishment. Learn more about the selection process for this scholarship.


James B. Duke Scholarships


Awarded to incoming students each year who have displayed exceptional academic achievement and distinctive personal accomplishment. Learn more about the selection process for this scholarship.


John D. Hollingsworth Scholarships



  • Renewable $25,000 scholarship

  • Study away stipend up to $2,000

  • Up to $3,000 stipend for a summer internship or research experience

  • Participation in the Public Leadership Seminars, which connect students with government and civic leaders

Awarded to incoming students from South Carolina who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and a strong commitment to their communities. Learn more about the selection process for this scholarship.


Charles H. Townes Scholarships



  • Renewable $25,000 scholarship

  • Study away stipend of up to $2,000

  • Up to $3,000 stipend for a summer internship or research experience

Alden Pre-Engineering Scholarships


Awarded to freshmen enrolling in the three-year pre-engineering program.


Alden Transfer Scholarship


The Alden Transfer Scholarship is a full tuition, two-year scholarship for transfer students.


Art Scholarships


Competitive scholarships awarded on the basis of portfolio submissions and the attendance of one of our portfolio review days held on January 25 and February 1. Learn more about the selection process.


Chemistry Scholarships


For students planning a career in the chemical industry or planning to pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry.


Exploration of Vocational Ministry Scholarships


Available to students exploring a career in full-time faith-based ministry.


Furman Teacher Education Scholarships


Renewable scholarships awarded to entering freshmen who indicate teaching as a career goal.


Herman and Francis Hipp Scholarships


Renewable scholarships awarded to intended business administration, economics, and computer science majors.


Merit-based Legacy Scholarships


Competitive, renewable scholarships available to incoming students who have indicated on the application supplement that a parent or grandparent attended Furman University. Applicant must complete a Furman Admission Network (FAN) interview.


Mock Trial Scholarships


Renewable scholarships awarded to entering freshmen with a passion for and commitment to the Mock Trial activity and a desire to participate in Furman's Mock Trial program.


Music Scholarships


Competitive scholarships awarded on the basis of auditions held on December 7, January 17-18, and February 14-15. Learn more about the selection process.


Poverty Studies Scholarship


Renewable scholarships awarded to entering freshmen with a commitment to poverty studies and a desire to complete the poverty studies interdisciplinary minor.


ROTC Scholarships



  • Up to full tuition and fees

  • Monthly stipend during the academic year

SOAR (Science, Opportunities, Activities, and Resources) Scholars Program


Renewable scholarships awarded to incoming freshmen who intend to major in chemistry or biology.


Sustainability Science Scholarships


Renewable scholarships awarded to entering freshmen with a commitment to sustainability and a desire to major in sustainability science.


Theatre Arts Scholarships


Renewable scholarships awarded to entering freshmen with a commitment to theatre arts and a desire to major in theatre arts at Furman. All applicants must apply for this scholarship online, as well as participate in a theatre arts audition. Auditions are held on November 23 and February 22. Learn more about the selection process.


Wylie Mathematics Scholarships


Renewable scholarships awarded to entering freshmen with outstanding mathematical ability and a combined SAT score of at least 1350.
