Dear Colleagues,

I would be grateful if you could circulate this opportunity to your current
or past eligible students with a history and/or humanities background.

Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, offers fully-funded
scholarships for doctoral study in the humanities. Entry is competitive and
based on merit. See:http://www.victoria.ac.nz/home/study/postgrad/phd The duration of PhD candidature is three years of full-time study. There is no coursework. Students produce a thesis of 100,000 words for examination at the end of their candidature. There are three closing dates annually for applications: Friday 01 November 2013, 01 March 2014, and 1 July 2014. The November application deadline is the closest and I can help students develop an application for submission to that round. I am a social and cultural historian of modern Europe, and in particular of the mid-twentieth century period (as seen below) and can offer supervision to students in the following broad areas in the History Programme, among others on cognate or related areas in German and/or European history that can be developed from students' interests. There will be an associate supervisor from History or a related discipline depending on the topic. Possible topic areas: · Holocaust Representation, including film · Holocaust Literature in German (co-supervised with colleagues in German) · New Media and Extremism · Digital Witnessing and anti-genocide narratives · The memory of liberation and displacement as represented in oral testimonies and/or memoirs · The Voice of Oral History in recent Holocaust historiography (this topic would utilise Shoah Foundation testimonies held at Monash University, Melbourne). · The Visual Biography of Bodies in War: Photojournalism and civil unrest (1936-1948) (focus on Spain, Germany and Italy) · Topics on Jewish refugee histories in one of the following countries or in comparison: New Zealand, Australia and the Asia-Pacific region (Shanghai, Hong Kong, the Philippines) Eligibility: Applicants would normally be expected to have completed a Bachelor of Arts or Master of Arts degree with academic distinction equivalent to a First Class Honours degree at a New Zealand University. The Process: Prospective students are encouraged to get in touch with me ( simone.gigliotti@vuw.ac.nz) and visit the following site for information on the PhD application process:http://cms.victoria.ac.nz/fgr/prospective-phds/how-to-apply and the PhD regulations:http://www.victoria.ac.nz/scholarship/forms/vicdoc-regs.pdf A visual guide to the Application Process can be downloaded here:http://cms.victoria.ac.nz/fgr/prospective-phds/publications/Online-Admission-and-Scholarship-Flowchart.pdf Benefits: The scholarship is awarded with $23,500 NZD per annum and payment of tuition fees. Students are eligible to apply for Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Research Grants to travel to research locations and attend conferences. Why Wellington? It is New Zealand's capital city and has a diverse student community. See:http://cms.victoria.ac.nz/fgr/prospective-phds/why-vic/photos Wellington is situated in a picturesque harbour and is blessed with an abundance of outdoor activities and natural beauty. It is close to Sydney and Melbourne (both cities can be reached in 3 hours), the Pacific Islands (3-4 hours), and Auckland to Los Angeles is a 12-hour flight. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask. Best regards, Simone Gigliotti Dr. Simone Gigliotti History Programme Victoria University PO Box 600 Wellington, 6140, New Zealand simone.gigliotti@vuw.ac.nz tel: +64 4 463 6775; fax: +64 4 4635261 --
