Federico Subervi

Before joining the JMC faculty in fall 2013, Subervi served as professor and director of the Center for the Study of Latino Media & Markets at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, where his research and teaching focus was on exploring the relationship of ethnic minorities to the mass media, especially the Latino community.

He is the editor and author of The Mass Media and Latino Politics: Studies of U.S. Media Content, Campaign Strategies and Survey Research: 1984-2004, along with more than 25 book chapters, more than 20 journal articles and more than 15 independent reports. His current writing focuses on media and politics in Puerto Rico, his home country.

Subervi has held other distinguished academic positions such as associate professor and graduate advisor, Department of Radio-TV-Film, University of Texas at Austin, and assistant professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He has also taught abroad as a visiting professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil; at Zeppelin University in Germany; UNESCO Professor at the Universidade Metodista de São Paulo, Brazil; and at the Universidad Diego Portales in Santiago, Chile. In 1988-89 he was a Fulbright Research Scholar in Brazil, and in 2011 a Fulbright Latin American Specialist in Chile.

Throughout his career, Subervi has obtained many research grants. His most recent project for a study on how labor issues and Latino issues were covered on national TV network news was funded by the Communication Workers of America and the Newspaper Guild. Earlier research grants have been obtained from the Ford Foundation, the McCormick Foundation, the Kaiser Family Foundation, among others.

In 2012, Subervi was awarded the Lionel L. Barrow Jr. Award for Distinguished Achievement in Diversity Research and Education by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and its Commission for the Status of Minorities, and the Minorities in Communication Division.

Subervi is an active member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, currently serving on the Task Force on AEJMC in the Global Century, and previously chaired the Task Force on Latino/Latin American Outreach, the Minorities and Communication Division and the Commission on the Status of Minorities. He is a member of the International Communication Association, for which he currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Ethnicity, Race in the Media Division.

Subervi serves on the board of directors of the Latino Public Radio Consortium ( ). From 2002-2005 he was chairman of the board of directors of www.latinopublicradioconsortium.org ), and is the Academic Officer on the board of directors of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists ( www.nahj.org ( Latinitas, Inc., a web-based magazine and organization dedicated to empowering Latina youth via media and technology www.latinitasmagazine.org ) , and served on the board of directors of the Hispanic Scholarship Consortium ( www.hispanicscholar.org ). Over a decade ago, he launched The Latinos and Media Project, an initiative dedicated to the gathering and sharing of information and resources about Latinos and the media ( www.latinosandmedia.org ) , which is now being merged with the Media Diversity Forum (www.mediadiversityforum.lsu.edu ).

Subervi has been quoted on Latino issues in the , the The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times , Washington Post, The Huffington Post, The Boston Globe San Francisco Chronicle, the Las Vegas Sun, the Miami Herald, El Nuevo Día, and many others.

He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Puerto Rico in social science and journalism, respectively, before earning a Ph.D. in mass communication from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
